Here is a nice little video that shows what I always tell people who want to learn about internet marketing… they need to learn Direct Marketing
Direct Marketing:
Direct marketing is a sub-discipline and type of marketing. There are two main definitional characteristics which distinguish it from other types of marketing. The first is that it attempts to send its messages directly to consumers, without the use of intervening media. This involves commercial communication (direct mail, e-mail, telemarketing) with consumers or businesses, usually unsolicited. The second characteristic is that it is focused on driving a specific “call-to-action.” This aspect of direct marketing involves an emphasis on trackable, measurable positive (but not negative) responses from consumers (known simply as “response” in the industry) regardless of medium.
If the advertisement asks the prospect to take a specific action, for instance call a free phone number or visit a website, then the effort is considered to be direct response advertising.
Internet marketing is nothing new… it’s simply a new MEDIUM to send a sales message.
For those who wish to learn “Internet Marketing” will spend months or years running around in circles… simply because they are trying to understand the technology, the latest website trick, google adwords, affiliate marketing, etc, etc…
You need to learn “real marketing” a.k.a. Direct Response Marketing if you want to learn the underlying reason why people buy, how to hit their hot buttons, how to persuade them to take action and how to track results…
I’ve always been a big fan of Gary Halbert and I recently purchased every single book + tape + lecture on him I could from Seminar.org (currently sold out)
It’s good to see big internet marketers like Frank Kern give major props to Gary Halbert… these big guys like Joe Polish and others learned the basics of direct marketing and ONLY THEN went on to become big time in the internet marketing world…
Because I’d prefer to redundant instead of remiss I’ll say it again… FORGET INTERNET MARKETING… and concentrate on DIRECT RESPONSE MARKETING and then you don’t have to worry about the latest and greatest software, google’s new search engine change, etc, etc.
Knowing how true marketing persuades people to action…that knowledge transcends any and all marketing MEDIUMS… and at the end of the day – that’s all the internet is: just a way of getting a message across to people.
